This is distinct from full legalization, as decriminalization typically means the substances are still illegal but penalties are reduced or eliminated for personal use. In recent years, several cities and states in the U.S., such as Denver, Oregon, and Oakland, have taken steps toward decriminalizing psychedelics, citing their potential for therapeutic use in treating addiction, depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Research into psychedelics as a form of treatment has gained momentum, driven by studies that highlight their ability to facilitate deep psychological healing in controlled therapeutic settings [5-8].
Urban addiction treatment trends are influenced by the increasing burden of substance use disorders, particularly opioid addiction, in cities.
