Abstract

Epilepsy, a complex neurological disorder characterized by recurrent seizures, has intrigued and mystified humanity for ages. With its historical ties to superstitions and misunderstandings, epilepsy has long been shadowed by stigma. However, modern neuroscience has illuminated its mechanisms, revealing the role of abnormal brain activity in seizure generation. This article provides an overview of epilepsy's historical context, its underlying mechanisms, diverse types and triggers, advancements in diagnosis and treatment, and efforts to combat stigma. With research unlocking genetic and molecular insights, the path forward offers promising possibilities for more tailored and effective interventions, fostering a future where individuals with epilepsy can lead fulfilling lives.
