Abstract
Obesity in children is an issue of global magnitude. Several studies report an association between obesity and functional gastrointestinal disorders. Recently, obesity is also becoming increasingly recognized at diagnosis of organic GI diseases such as celiac disease and inflammatory bowel disease. An awareness of all possible complications and associations of obesity by the practicing physician is crucial to provide comprehensive care to obese children. Present data on the association between obesity and various common GI disorders will be discussed including the possible mechanisms and the clinical significance of these associations.Biography
Uma Padhye Phatak received her medical degree from India and completed her Pediatric internship and residency at Goryeb Children’s hospital in NJ. She completed her fellowship training in Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition at Yale New Haven Children’s hospital, Yale School of Medicine. During fellowship, his research focused on understanding the immune mechanisms in children with inflammatory bowel disease. She provides care to children with general GI conditions and also children with inflammatory bowel disease at the multidisciplinary pediatric IBD clinic at Yale New Haven Children's Hospital. His research interests include obesity and GI disorders and nutrition in chronic GI disorders such as IBD.
