Abstract
The presented study aimed to examine the psychometric properties of a Portuguese version of the Internet Addiction Test (IAT) (Young, 1998). The study was conducted in four phases: a) translation, b) retroversion, c) validity and reliability and d) exploratory and confirmatory analysis in order to ascertain the tests adequacy to the Portuguese population. The IAT was developed in Youngs early works where the she adapted criteria of pathological gambling as in DSM-IV (APA, 1994). As so, the IAT was designed to evaluate which areas of an individuals life might be affected by their excessive Internet use (Widyant, Griffiths & Brunsden, 2011). The Portuguese version of Youngs Internet Addiction Test (IAT) was administered to a sample of 500 Portuguese adolescents and young adults students ranging from secondary to university level. The subjects participated in the study by either filling in the online version of the test at their home (online condition) or at the academic context in the classroom or auditorium (offline condition). The results of the present study shall give us some more data regarding the factorial structure of IAT since it remains unclear in the literature, and also reveal its properties for the current version adapted.
