Abstract
Injectable polymeric delivery system for the delivery of drugs to diseased sites with minimal systemic drug distribution is being developed. Intra-tumoral injection of polymer loaded with paclitaxel or cisplatin for treating solid tumors was highly effective and safe when tested in tumor bearing animal models. The drug is being released for a period of 4 weeks while the polymer is degraded and eliminated from the body shortly after. These pasty injectable polymers have been used for the delivery of antibiotics for treating chronic bone infections and pain relief by delivering of local anesthetics such as lidocaine and bupivacaine. Mucoadhesive discs for treating oral disorders such as dry mouth and oral ulcers were developed. The formulation in the form of an adhesive disc or paste loaded with natural remedies were found highly effective in treating ulcers and dry mouth symptoms in human studies. The tablet is attached onto the ulcer for pain relief and enhanced healing. We have been investigating the delivery of TRH, a tripeptide drug, to the brain through the olfactory via nasal spray, this product is now being considered for clinical trials.
