Abstract

The proteins have a crucial role in the prevention and treatment of metabolic and cardio-vascular diseases. The author presents
his 30-year experience in the treatment and prevention of obesity, dyslipidemias, and related co-morbidities with diets rich of
proteins. A diet with 1400 kcal/daily with optimal protein content (25-28% energy) has been given for the treatment of overweight
and obesity for a period of one to three months per year. A beneficial effect of the use of Bulgarian yoghurt in different diets has been
established for the treatment and prevention of obesity, metabolic syndrome, and atherosclerosis. A total of 1276 shift and night
transport workers was given nutritional regiment containing 108.2 g of proteins/daily with beneficial effect on body mass, fat mass,
lipid and cardio-vascular status. The results from the pan-European project DiOGenes showed that diet with high protein content had
significant positive effect on weight loss maintenance as well as on several cardio-vascular parameters. Our last studies show that the
diet with optimal protein content demonstrates its healthy effects in overweight and obese patients.
